September 2012 Featured Child

Jayden Oulahyane was born on October 3, 2006 in Annapolis, MD.  Healthy and super handsome at birth, “Jay Jay” was a perfect baby.  When he was two months of age, everything changed.  He started having these strange crunching movements and a month later was diagnosed with infantile spasms.  Since his diagnosis at Children’s National in DC in late January of 2007, Jay’s been subjected to numerous tests and they have not come up with a formal diagnosis.  He’s tried almost every seizure medicine and the ketogenic diet to no avail and continues to have seizures every single day.  In addition to the seizure disorder, Jay also suffers from nephrotic syndrome – a condition in which his kidneys spill protein out into his urine causing scarring in the kidneys.  He is cortically blind and dependent upon a feeding tube for his nutrition.

So, that’s all the bad stuff…but that’s not the real Jay Jay.  He’s so sweet and loving.  He spends all of his time snuggling with his Mommy, Kari; sitting with his Daddy, Karim, while he watches soccer; and flashing his big cheeky smiles that light up the room.  He loves going to school and adores being around other children.  Jay loves music, hugs, and kisses.  He has helped his Mommy find her true strength and because of him she has made lifelong friends whom she otherwise never would have met.  Jay’s Daddy works so hard to provide for the family and Jay loves when the two of them can just spend quiet time together.  His Mommy and Daddy are truly grateful for the lessons that he has taught them…the greatest of which is unconditional love.  He has been an amazing gift to his family and they treasure every single second they are given with him.
