December 2012 Featured Child

Our sweet little Jazlyn Eva was born on December 7, 2009 the day of mommy’s grad finals. Since then we knew she would be the one to challenge us yet make us strong. It was not until a few weeks later when our family realized there was something bothering Jazlyn. I kept asking advice from other parents and visiting our pediatrician trying to ask about Jazlyn’s symptoms but the familiar diagnosis was always told to me, “It is just colic”. But a mother’s instinct are never wrong and I stayed persistent that my daughter needed a thorough checkup.

Soon after the lab withdrew blood from our Jazlyn she broke out in a full attack seizure. We immediately rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital and it was there that we received our life changing news Jazlyn had a seizure disorder yet none of the neurologists could determine the cause. At 2 months old, we stayed in the hospital administrating vitamin shots, EEGS, MRI, CT’S, LP’S, and finally a week later we were released only with the hope that Jazlyn would eventually grow out of her Seizures.

After 2 years we have endured our shares of trial and error but our greatest success was with the Ketogenic Diet that controlled Jazlyn’s seizures until August 2012. Jazlyn’s seizures have now been classified as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome she has average of 6-8 clustered seizures a day although it is labeled as the most severe type of seizures Jazlyn is proving it wrong. She is able to fight them off when she hears our voices she is trying her best to walk and stand on her own, she wants to understand the world and everything big sister does and every day she surprises me with new oral sounds.

She loves the outdoors and exploring new things and every seizure she gets she shrugs it off and shows the world that she is strong and nothing will hold her back. She is our greatest inspiration and one day we know her seizures will fade away. We love our Jazlyn.
