PostTonic Seizures in a 14 month old
on: June 29, 2011, 00:23

We just found out today that our 14 month old daughter is having what appears to be tonic seizures. We have a family history on both mine and my husband's sides of the family of epilepsy. Our pediatrician has referred us to a Neurologist here in town, but not to the pediatric neurologist as he feels the neurologist is a better doctor. We are considering trying to get in with a pedi neurologist in a town three hours away since they specialize in pediatrics. What are your experiences or thoughts? Have any of you tried homeopathic medicine? Any advice or suggestions you can give would be appreciated.

Hi Jill my name is Susan and I am the women whom formed and started The Epilepsy Warriors Foundation and creator of this website. I am so sorry about your Daughter and that she is having Seizures and will keep her and your family in my thoughts and prayers. My personal advice to you is to go with the Pediatric Neurologist and see what he or she says or does and if they then recommend a Neurologist then do that. I was wondering if you are on facebook here is the link to our group page for the foundation and if you are I would love to have you join us on their we have a wonderful group of parents and support and I also can then provide you with some more information. https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_215770501786041&ap=1 I also can research for you a doctor in the area of where you live or even an Epileptologist as they work specifically with Children and people that suffer from Epilepsy.

Hi Jill, I would recommend a Specialist. While neurologist can treat Epilepsy a specialist is specialized with training and education Specifically with seizures & Epilepsy.
My son had Epilepsy and has since passed: I had good experiences & a positive relationship with my sons neuro, I now realize that a Specialist is the one that should have been treating my son. Here's the difference:
A neurologist is a physician (not a surgeon) who specializes in neurology, and is trained to investigate, or diagnose and treat neurological disorders. Neurological disorders are disorders that can affect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), the peripheral nervous system, or the autonomic nervous system.
An epileptologist is a general neurologist who has taken at least an additional 2 years of specialized training in epilepsy and treats only epilepsy.
When people talk about an epilepsy specialist they usually mean an epileptologist. There are neurologists with an interest in epilepsy, but without the additional specialized training.

I would also recommend a night time monitor that will sound off an alarm if your child has a tonic clonic or any seizure while sleeping. The company EMFIT makes a great one, that I wish I knew about beforehand and is now under-going the FDA approval process so physicians can recommend them but they are available to purchase now and I highly suggest a night time monitor.

You asked about home remedies, the only hompathic remedy for Epilepsy is the Ketigenic Diet, do your research on this but it has a high success rate, but is a difficult journey. Child has to be in the hospital to start the diet and MUST be under a specialist care to under-go such a diet.
Another idea, is seizure dogs, they are great resources to warn you when a seziure is about to happen. Chelsea Hutchinson Foundation assist families in getting one of these trained dogs and The Danny Did Foundation has a wealth of info on latest research for Epilepsy Awareness. Best wishes, Mylissa

Hi Jill- I am new on here, but I was curious to see what the replies were. My three year old had his first diagnosed seizure at 16 months- and a few suspicious events that the doctor beleves were seizures prior to that age. He has frontal lobe epilepsy- he has tonic clonic grand mal sezisure and absence seizures. We have undergone regular EEGs to no avail but recently underwent the extended monitored EEG and are coming up on our MRI to see if his epilepsy is a result of tumors and lesions o the loft lobe of his brain. (Thats this week). He has had a rough week- in turn I have as well. We have a pediatric neurologist; as well as, a specialist who work together. I am pleased with them both. I will say that I do sleep with a monitor on when my son is not in my bed - i take things one day at a time. If we wake having a good day then we go from there. My advice is to find someone who listens to you, talks to you, and tells you everything without making you feel "dumb." Trust your instinsts- you know your child better than anyone else. If I can offer you anything else let me know. Its a long road, but not impossible. Sometimes I feel as if the past two years have aged me and changed my demeanor. In all things, there is a reason and God knows it.
